Formula and method
18 saves from 20 shots is a 90% save rate, or 0.9 as a decimal index. Two goals allowed over 120 minutes is 1.0 per 60-minute regulation game.
Save rate = saves/shots; GAA = goals allowed × regulation minutes / minutes played

Assumptions and limitations
- Each save rate uses its own matching saves and shots totals. Counts must be whole numbers, shots must be positive and saves cannot exceed shots.
- Individual and aggregate rates are separate calculations. Aggregate counts should be added first; averaging individual percentages without weighting generally gives a different answer.
- Goals allowed and playing time must refer to the same interval. Both time inputs use minutes and the regulation duration is entered explicitly.
- Zero saves and zero goals allowed are valid. A no-shot sample has no defined save percentage; it is not automatically a zero-percent performance.
Common questions
How does the decimal index relate to the percentage?
Multiply the decimal index by 100. An index of 0.9 and a percentage of 90% express the same save rate.
