How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Inputs and results stay in this browser tab. Bookify does not upload or store the values you enter.
Formula and method
caloriePerMinute = 5.5125; burnedInTime = 110.25. The example uses the declared units and assumptions.
caloriePerMinute = (activity * bodyWeightKg * 3.5) / 200; burnedInTime = Time * caloriePerMinute ; caloriePerMinuteLoad = (load * bodyWeightKg * 3.5) / 200; burnedInTimeLoad = Time * caloriePerMinuteLoad
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Activity
- Stair climbing (slow)
- Body weight
- 70 kg
- Time elapsed
- 20 min
- Gross energy rate (kcal per selected time unit)
- 5.513 kcal/ min
- Total burned
- 110.25 kcal
Assumptions and limitations
- Uses the 2024 Adult Compendium for adults 19–59 and an oxygen-equivalent conversion with 1 MET=3.5 mL/kg/min and approximate 5 kcal per liter of oxygen. Estimates are gross energy including resting metabolism; actual individual expenditure varies. Load categories are carried loads, while body-mass input excludes that load.
- Editable controls retain the supported captured branches; clear an unknown and supply independent known quantities. A singular or underdetermined inverse may remain incomplete.
Common questions
What assumptions apply?
Uses the 2024 Adult Compendium for adults 19–59 and an oxygen-equivalent conversion with 1 MET=3.5 mL/kg/min and approximate 5 kcal per liter of oxygen. Estimates are gross energy including resting metabolism; actual individual expenditure varies. Load categories are carried loads, while body-mass input excludes that load.
Can I solve an unknown?
Clear an editable unknown and provide enough independent quantities in the displayed units. Discrete counts must remain whole numbers.
