How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Edit a calculated value to solve backwards, or lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

Driving 500 km with 40 litres gives 12.5 km per litre, equivalent to 8 litres per 100 km. At 1.50 per litre, the fuel cost is 60.

Fuel economy = distance ÷ fuel used; consumption = fuel used ÷ distance; cost = fuel used × unit fuel price

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Distance traveled
500 km
Fuel used
40 L
Fuel price
1.5 USD / L
Fuel economy
12.5 km/L
Fuel consumption
8 L/100 km
Trip cost
60 USD

Assumptions and limitations

  • Distance-per-fuel and fuel-per-distance are reciprocal measures. More km/L or MPG indicates more distance from the fuel; fewer L/100 km indicates less fuel for the distance. Match the selected US or imperial gallon and the price unit.
  • Match the units shown and use measured inputs where available. The result follows the stated model and does not account for unentered changes.
  • A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 litres; an imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres. Mileage and price must refer to the same gallon definition.

Common questions

Why does lower consumption mean better economy?

Distance-per-fuel and fuel-per-distance are reciprocal measures. More km/L or MPG indicates more distance from the fuel; fewer L/100 km indicates less fuel for the distance. Match the selected US or imperial gallon and the price unit.
