Formula and method
Multiply available fuel by distance traveled per unit of fuel. At 10 km/L, 50 liters supports a theoretical 500 kilometers; at 1.50 per liter, that fuel costs 75.
Distance = fuel quantity × fuel economy; fuel cost = fuel quantity × unit price
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Fuel efficiency
- 10 km/L
- Fuel quantity
- 50 L
- Fuel price
- 1.5 USD / L
- Distance
- 500 km
- Trip cost
- 75 USD
Assumptions and limitations
- The result is a mathematical range estimate, not a guaranteed usable range. Keep a fuel reserve and account for traffic, terrain, weather and changes in fuel economy.
- Use the units shown beside each field. This model assumes the stated relationship and does not account for quantities left out of the formula.
Common questions
Can I plan to drive until the tank is empty?
The result is a mathematical range estimate, not a guaranteed usable range. Keep a fuel reserve and account for traffic, terrain, weather and changes in fuel economy.
