Formula and method

A pre-tax price of 100 with an entered 8% tax rate gives 8 of tax and a total of 108. Dividing 108 by 1.08 recovers the original price.

Tax = net price × rate; gross price = net price × (1 + rate)

  • Use nonnegative amounts and a nonnegative rate. One percentage is applied to the entire supplied pre-tax price.
  • The model does not separate multiple tax jurisdictions, compound layered taxes, determine taxability or round individual invoice lines.

Common questions

Can I recover the pre-tax price from a receipt total?

Yes, if one known rate applies to the whole amount. Enter the gross price and rate while leaving the net price blank.

What does a zero rate do?

The tax amount is zero and the gross price equals the net price. The arithmetic does not determine whether a transaction qualifies for that rate.
