Formula and method
Adding an entered 20% VAT rate to 100 gives 120 gross and 20 VAT. Removing that same rate from 120 gives 100 net and 20 VAT.
Add: gross = net × (1 + rate); remove: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate)

Assumptions and limitations
- The rate is supplied by you. This tool does not determine the applicable jurisdiction, taxable base, exemptions, recoverability or invoice-rounding rules.
- Add mode treats the known amount as VAT-exclusive; Remove mode treats it as VAT-inclusive. Use nonnegative amounts and rates.
- One percentage applies to the entire amount. Mixed-rate baskets, special schemes and per-line invoice rounding are outside the model.
Common questions
Why is removing 20% VAT not the same as taking 20% off?
The rate was applied to the pre-VAT base. Divide the gross amount by 1.20 to recover that base; subtracting 20% of gross uses a different denominator.
Does the calculator choose a VAT rate for me?
No. Enter the rate that applies to the transaction after checking the relevant rules.
