Formula and method
An employee with 100,000 taxable wages in 2026 contributes 6,200 Social Security plus 1,450 Medicare, totaling 7,650 before any other taxes.
Social Security = min(taxable earnings,year cap)×6.2% employee or 12.4% self-employed; Medicare = earnings×1.45% or 2.9%; additional Medicare = 0.9% above filing-status threshold.

Assumptions and limitations
- Select the tax year explicitly: 2022 through 2026. Social Security caps are 147,000; 160,200; 168,600; 176,100; and 184,500. Medicare has no earnings cap.
- Enter taxable wages for employment or taxable net self-employment earnings after the applicable 92.35% adjustment. The model does not calculate that adjustment, deductions, mixed wage/self-employment coordination, multiple employers or joint-spouse earnings.
- Additional Medicare represents annual liability using the selected filing threshold: 250,000 jointly, 125,000 separately, 200,000 otherwise. Payroll withholding uses 200,000 regardless of filing status, so the table is not a paycheck withholding prediction. Employers do not match additional Medicare.
- Clear an editable unknown before solving an inverse. Selection controls and forced outputs cannot be inferred.
