Formula and method
A 100 g dry portion gives an estimated 300 g cooked portion under the threefold yield assumption.
Cooked mass = 3 × dry mass.
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Uncooked rice
- 100 g
- Cooked rice
- 300 g
Assumptions and limitations
- The factor three is a planning assumption for water uptake, not a universal measured yield. Rice type, rinsing, cooking method and draining affect the result.
- The cup selector uses a fixed bulk density of 0.7986 g/mL and a rounded 236.59 mL cup for both fields. Cooked rice does not generally have dry rice density; use mass units for portions.
- Both quantities must be positive. The inverse divides cooked mass by three; a portion is not a calorie or nutrition estimate.
Common questions
Can I convert a cooked portion back to dry rice?
Yes. Under this yield assumption, divide its mass by three.
Why does my cooked yield differ?
The retained water depends on the rice and preparation. Weigh your own batch when precision matters.
