Formula and method

At 20 per hour, 40 regular hours per week gives 3,478.50 per modeled month. Add eight overtime hours per month at 1.5 times the rate for 240 more, totaling 3,718.50 per modeled month.

Overtime hourly rate = regular hourly rate × multiplier; gross pay = regular hours × regular rate + overtime hours × overtime rate

Assumptions and limitations

  • Enter regular and overtime hours separately; this tool does not decide which hours qualify, whether an employee is exempt, or what law or agreement applies. The initial 40 hours and 1.5 multiplier are editable assumptions.
  • The regular rate may differ from a base wage when other compensation must be included. This model accepts the rate you supply and does not perform that payroll determination.
  • Read both time selectors: regular time starts in hours per week, while overtime starts in hours per month. The displayed pay totals start per month. These are comparable rates, not counts in one specific payroll interval.
  • Work-time scales are fixed at 8 hours per day, 40 per week, 173.925 per month and 2,087.1 per year (52.1775 weeks). They do not represent an actual calendar month or the separate 52-week salary model. All amounts, hours and the multiplier must be nonnegative.
  • Use consistent currencies. Optional currency conversions use the captured source rates, not live market rates.

Common questions

Does the tool automatically apply overtime rules?

No. Determine the applicable regular rate, multiplier and qualifying hours first, then enter them. Daily, weekly, holiday and contractual rules can differ.

What if there are no overtime hours?

Enter zero for overtime time. Overtime pay totals zero and combined gross pay equals the regular pay total.
