How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Use the result with context

Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.

Formula and method

A price of 300,000 for 1,500 square feet is 200 per square foot. Compare other properties using the same area basis and, for rent, the same rental period.

Price per area = total price or period rent ÷ measured area

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Property 1 price or period rent
300000 USD
Property 1 area
1500 ft²
Property 1 price per selected area
200 USD / ft²

Assumptions and limitations

  • Use comparable measured areas: indoor living space, gross building area and land area are different denominators. Area must be positive.
  • For rent, enter the same period for every property. The tool does not distinguish monthly rent from annual rent or include utilities, service charges, taxes, financing costs or local market adjustments.
  • Changing an area unit preserves the underlying area. The price-per-area output has its own denominator selector; read it independently.
  • Use a consistent currency when comparing amounts. Optional currency conversions use captured reference factors, not live exchange rates, bank quotes or fees.

Common questions

Does a lower price per square foot mean a better purchase?

This ratio compares price and measured area only. Condition, location, legal use, lease terms and other costs can make properties with similar ratios substantially different.

Can I solve for a total price?

Yes. Enter a price per area and an area in compatible units, leaving total price blank.
