How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Use the result with context

Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.

Formula and method

Adding 25% of a net amount of 100 gives gross 125 and tax 25. That same tax is 20% of the gross amount because 25 ÷ 125 = 0.20.

Gross = net × (1 + net-based rate); gross-based rate = net-based rate ÷ (1 + net-based rate)

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Enter an applicable rate; this arithmetic does not determine a legal tax rate or payroll withholding. Net and gross must be positive, and the tax amount must be nonnegative.
  • The gross-based percentage must be below 100%. A zero rate is supported and leaves net equal to gross.
  • Use consistent currencies. Optional currency conversions use the captured source rates, not live market rates.

Common questions

Which percentage is normally added to the net price?

Use the percentage defined on the net base. A gross-based percentage describes the tax share of the final total and is numerically different.

Can I start with a gross total?

Yes. Enter gross and either rate, leaving net blank. Gross 125 with a 20% gross-based tax share gives net 100.
