Formula and method

Four boards measuring 2 in Ă— 6 in Ă— 8 ft contain 32 board feet. At 5 currency units per board foot, total cost is 160.

Board feet = thickness(in) Ă— width(in) Ă— length(ft) Ă— boards / 12; cost = board feet Ă— price per board foot

Assumptions and limitations

  • One board foot is a volume of 144 cubic inches. All boards in one calculation share the entered dimensions.
  • Use the actual dimensions for physical volume, or the supplier’s stated tally dimensions when reproducing an invoice. Nominal and dressed lumber dimensions differ.
  • Board count must be a positive whole number. Dimensions must be positive; a zero price is allowed. Waste, defects, kerf, taxes and delivery are excluded.
  • Use the same currency for comparable inputs. Currency selectors use the captured October 7, 2026 exchange-rate snapshot, not current market rates.

Common questions

Can I combine different board sizes?

Calculate each size group separately and add the board-foot totals. Do not multiply a mixed group by one board’s dimensions.

References

Bookify requires a whole board count and allows zero prices while preserving board-foot volume and cost equations.
