Formula and method
An area of 162 square feet covered to a depth of six inches requires a geometric volume of three cubic yards before allowances.
Cubic yards = square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Area to cover
- 162 ft²
- Uniform layer depth
- 6 in
- Geometric material volume
- 3 cu yd
Assumptions and limitations
- Area and depth are positive. The layer has uniform thickness over the entered area.
- The result is geometric volume before waste, compaction, settlement, over-excavation or packaging allowances.
- This calculation does not choose slab thickness, reinforcement or other structural specifications.
Common questions
Why divide square feet times inches by 324?
Divide by 12 to convert depth to feet, then by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards: 12 × 27 = 324.
Can I calculate depth from volume?
Yes. Enter volume and area to solve for uniform depth using consistent units.
