How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method
An affected fraction of 1 in 100 is q²=0.01 under the model. Then q=0.1, p=0.9 and the expected heterozygote fraction is 0.18.
q=√affected frequency; p=1−q; genotype fractions p²,2pq,q².
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Occurrence of the disease:
- 100
- Healthy allele frequency (p)
- 0.9
- Mutant allele frequency (q)
- 0.1
Assumptions and limitations
- This is a two-allele autosomal-recessive Hardy–Weinberg model, assuming random mating, a large population and no relevant migration, selection or mutation effects.
- Affected frequency is a population fraction under the stated genotype model. The result does not determine an individual person’s genotype, inheritance risk or need for testing.
- Both allele frequencies lie strictly between zero and one for a finite reciprocal carrier-frequency result. Percentage and one-in-N inputs express the same affected fraction.
Common questions
What does this result represent?
This is a two-allele autosomal-recessive Hardy–Weinberg model, assuming random mating, a large population and no relevant migration, selection or mutation effects.
Can I solve for another quantity?
Enter the known quantities and clear the unknown where an inverse relationship is available. Selection presets remain separate from measurements you supply; use locks to retain known inputs.
