How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

A one-thousandth-acre sample with 20 ears and 900 kernels per ear gives 200 bushels/acre at 90,000 kernels/bushel. Ten acres at 5 per bushel give 10,000 gross sales.

Bushels/acre = ears × kernels/ear × 1000 ÷ kernels/bushel; sales = yield × acres × price/bushel.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Count ears in a representative 1/1000-acre sample. The 1000 multiplier expands that sample to one acre. Repeat samples across the field before interpreting a field estimate.
  • Small, medium and large kernels use retained scenario divisors of 120,000, 90,000 and 80,000 kernels/bushel. Kernel mass, moisture and fill vary; these divisors are assumptions rather than measured test weights.
  • The sales output is gross revenue. It does not deduct production, drying, storage, marketing or harvesting costs and does not measure net profit.

Common questions

What does this result represent?

Count ears in a representative 1/1000-acre sample. The 1000 multiplier expands that sample to one acre. Repeat samples across the field before interpreting a field estimate.

Can I solve for another quantity?

Enter the known quantities and clear the unknown where an inverse relationship is available. Selection presets remain separate from measurements you supply; use locks to retain known inputs.
