Formula and method

A gross amount of 125 with a 20% deduction measured against gross leaves 100 net. The same 25 difference is 25% of the net amount.

Net = gross × (1 − gross-based rate); gross = net × (1 + net-based rate)

Assumptions and limitations

  • A single percentage is applied to the selected base. This is not a payroll or progressive income-tax calculation; it has no brackets, allowances or fixed deductions.
  • Gross and net amounts must be positive. The gross-based deduction must be at least zero and below 100%. Choose the matching mode before entering the rate.

Common questions

Why do the two rates differ?

The monetary difference is divided by different bases. For gross 125 and net 100, the difference 25 is 20% of gross but 25% of net.

Can I use a published tax rate without checking its base?

No. Establish whether that rate is added to a net amount, deducted from a gross amount or applied through another rule before using this arithmetic.
