How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

Two 254 cm rows at 25.4 cm seed spacing give 20 seed positions. Three 304.8 cm rows at 30.48 cm seedling spacing give 30 positions.

Count = row count × floor(row length/spacing).

Assumptions and limitations

  • The calculation counts complete spacing intervals and excludes an extra position at the far endpoint. It assumes equal row lengths and positive whole row counts.
  • Initial sowing spacing differs from final thinning or transplant spacing. Retained crop presets are coarse scenarios; use the seed packet, cultivar and local growing plan for actual spacing.
  • The zero-spacing pepper/celery/eggplant sowing option suppresses a numerical seed count and explains broadcast-style sowing. It is not an instruction to thin or transplant at zero spacing.

Common questions

What does this result represent?

The calculation counts complete spacing intervals and excludes an extra position at the far endpoint. It assumes equal row lengths and positive whole row counts.

Can I solve for another quantity?

Enter the known quantities and clear the unknown where an inverse relationship is available. Selection presets remain separate from measurements you supply; use locks to retain known inputs.
