Formula and method
A rectangular area 2 m by 3 m filled 10 cm deep needs 0.6 m³ before allowance, or 0.66 m³ with 10% extra. Weight uses a fixed model density of 1.5 US short tons per cubic yard.
Rectangular volume = length × width × depth; oval volume = π × length × width × depth ÷ 4; order volume = base volume × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)

Assumptions and limitations
- The circular mode uses both full diameters. Equal length and width describe a circle; unequal values describe an ellipse. The depth is uniform in either mode.
- Extra allowance is applied once to the geometric volume. It is not a measured compaction factor, moisture correction or supplier delivery tolerance.
- The fixed bulk-density assumption is 1.5 US short tons per cubic yard, or 3,000 lb/yd³. Actual aggregate density varies; use a supplier’s measured bulk density for an order requiring a different density.
- One US short ton is 2,000 avoirdupois pounds, or 907.18474 kg. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Read the selected mass and volume units.
- Dimensions must be positive and the extra allowance nonnegative. This estimate does not determine drainage performance, pavement thickness or structural suitability.
Common questions
Why might the delivered weight differ?
The calculation uses a fixed bulk-density estimate. Material grading, moisture, voids and compaction can change the actual mass for the same volume.
What should I enter for a circular area?
Enter the same full diameter as both length and width. Entering a radius would understate the area by a factor of four.
