Formula and method

A net price of 200 with an entered GST rate of 5% gives tax of 10 and a gross price of 210. Working backwards, divide 210 by 1.05 to recover the net price of 200.

Gross price = net price × (1 + rate); tax = net price × rate; net price = gross price ÷ (1 + rate)

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Enter the rate applicable to the transaction. This tool does not select a jurisdiction, determine taxability, or supply current tax rates.
  • The entered rate is applied once to the entire net price. Exemptions, multiple taxes, compounding, input tax credits and line-by-line invoice rounding require separate treatment.

Common questions

How do I remove GST from a tax-inclusive price?

Enter the gross price and rate. The net price is gross divided by one plus the rate as a fraction; subtracting the percentage directly from gross gives a different answer.

Can the tax rate be zero?

Yes. At a zero rate, net and gross are equal and the tax amount is zero. That arithmetic does not determine whether a transaction is legally zero-rated.
