Formula and method
A 4 m long, 1.2 m high wall using 50 cm long and 40 cm high blocks requires three courses of eight. With one same-height cap course, that is 16 wall blocks and eight cap blocks.
Columns = ceil[wall length / block length]; courses = ceil[wall height / block height]; wall blocks with cap = (courses − 1) × columns

Assumptions and limitations
- Counts describe a straight rectangular wall with identical course heights and covering lengths for wall and cap blocks. The cap replaces the top course; it does not replace one block in each course.
- The source model has no separate cap dimensions. Products with thinner caps, different cap lengths, setbacks, joints, corners or curves need a separate measured layout.
- Backfill is a rectangular prism with a fixed captured bulk density of 1346 kg/m³. The imperial preset is aligned to that same density; moisture, compaction and aggregate type can change real mass.
- Whole blocks round upward by course and column. Cutting waste, buried courses, reinforcement, drainage, excavation and labor are excluded. This is a material estimate, not retaining-wall structural design.
Common questions
What if the wall is only one course high?
With cap mode enabled, the single course contains caps and no ordinary wall blocks. That count assumes the cap height equals the entered course height.
References
Bookify makes both unit-system defaults represent the captured 1346 kg/m³ gravel bulk-density assumption. Bookify allows zero ordinary blocks in a cap-only course and nonnegative material prices and costs. Bookify replaces the top course with cap blocks by subtracting one course, correcting the captured subtraction of one block per course. Bookify uses exact customary mass and volume definitions for density units, replacing rounded factors in the reference.
