How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Inputs and results stay in this browser tab. Bookify does not upload or store the values you enter.

Formula and method

Example in initial displayed units: Railing length 3, Number of posts 2, Post width 10, Baluster width 4, Gap target 10 gives Balusters needed 20.

N = ceil((L−post count×post width)/(baluster width+gap target))

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Railing length
3 m
Number of posts
2
Post width
10 cm
Baluster width
4 cm
Gap target

Balusters needed

Assumptions and limitations

  • The captured formula estimates an aggregate whole-baluster quantity after subtracting post widths. It does not allocate balusters or gaps to individual bays. Gap is a planning target, not a verified installed opening. The retained 4-inch input cap is not certification of any jurisdiction’s guard requirements.
  • Use compatible units and enough independent measurements. Clear unknown values before solving backward. Display precision does not quantify uncertainty in site measurements.

Common questions

Does the count guarantee compliant spacing in every railing bay?

No. Lay out each bay and check actual openings, including end and bottom gaps, against the locally adopted code. The aggregate count alone does not establish installed spacing.

References

Require physical geometric bounds, viable clear spans and whole post counts for the documented planning model.
