Formula and method
In initial displayed units, Wall length (L) 4, Wall height (H) 2, Brick length (l) 190, Brick height (h) 90, Brick width (w) 100, Mortar joint thickness (t) 10, Brick wastage 10, Price per brick 2 gives Wall area 8, Bricks needed 400, Total bricks needed 440, Cost of bricks 880.
Bricks = ceil(wall area/((brick length+joint)×(brick height+joint))×wall layers); waste-adjusted bricks = ceil(bricks×(1+waste)).

Assumptions and limitations
- Brick dimensions and joints describe effective coverage, without openings or bond-pattern allocation. Mortar ingredient ratios are volumetric planning inputs; dry-to-wet factor is restricted to the retained 1.52–1.57 convention and waste to 0–20%. Mix recipes do not certify mortar performance. Exact whole-count operations accept finite quantities with magnitude below 10^50.
- Use compatible measurement units. Clear an unknown before solving for it, and lock independent known values when comparing changes. Currency choices label amounts without exchange-rate conversion.
Common questions
Can I solve backward from the result?
Clear the unknown and enter independent known values. A rounded whole count cannot uniquely recover a continuous dimension; keep the original measured dimensions for procurement planning.

Use exact decimal ceilings for whole quantities because the captured mathjs ceiling can undercount immediately above an integer boundary. Bookify uses exact customary mass and volume definitions for density units, replacing rounded factors in the reference.
