Formula and method
A 2,000 kg vehicle base weight plus 800 kg of rated payload totals 2,800 kg. This is a consistency calculation; a vehicle’s certified GVWR must come from its manufacturer.
Gross rating = compatible vehicle base weight + rated payload
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Vehicle base / tare weight
- 2000 kg
- Rated payload
- 800 kg
- Gross rating / combined weight
- 2800 kg
Assumptions and limitations
- Use compatible definitions for the vehicle base weight and payload so occupants, fuel and equipment are neither omitted nor counted twice. Tare and curb-weight conventions can differ.
- The calculated sum does not establish or increase a manufacturer’s rating. Use the certification label and the vehicle’s instructions for the actual GVWR, axle, tire and towing limits.
- All three quantities must be positive in this model. It does not assess load distribution, trailer tongue weight, axle limits or towing capacity.
Common questions
Can adding a payload number establish my vehicle’s GVWR?
No. GVWR is specified by the manufacturer. The arithmetic can compare known, consistently defined quantities but cannot certify a safe load.
How do I calculate the difference between a rating and base weight?
Enter the manufacturer’s gross rating and the compatible base weight, leaving Rated payload blank. For 2,800 kg minus 2,000 kg, the difference is 800 kg.
