How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method
Ten running hours at an average 80.4672 km/h (50 mph) correspond to 500 miles. In idle mode the same multiplication gives an assumed maintenance equivalent, not distance actually traveled.
Distance = engine hours × average speed; idle equivalent = idle hours × assumed distance-per-hour factor
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Driving / idle hours
- 10 hours
- Average speed / assumed idle equivalent rate
- 80.4672 km/h
- Travel / assumed equivalent distance
- 500 mi
Assumptions and limitations
- Driving mode requires average speed over the same hours entered. Engine hours alone cannot determine mileage.
- Idle mode does not measure travel or engine wear. Its distance-per-hour factor is a user assumption; no universal idle-hour-to-mile conversion or maintenance interval is established here.
- Hours, rate and distance must be positive. Select the intended speed and distance units independently.
Common questions
How many miles does one engine hour equal?
There is no fixed value. At 50 miles per hour, one driving hour covers 50 miles. An idle engine can run for an hour without the vehicle traveling any distance.
Can I use this to set a service interval?
The arithmetic can evaluate a factor you already have, but it does not supply a vehicle-specific wear model. Use the manufacturer’s time, mileage and operating-condition guidance.
