How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

Over 100 km, an average 50 km/h takes two hours and 100 km/h takes one hour. The second time minus the first is −1 hour: one hour less travel time.

Time = distance ÷ speed; time difference = second travel time − first travel time

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Shared travel distance
100 km
First average speed
50 km/h
Second average speed
100 km/h
First travel time
2:0:0 hrs / min / sec
Second travel time
1:0:0 hrs / min / sec
Second time minus first time
-1:0:0 hrs / min / sec

Assumptions and limitations

  • Both journeys cover the same positive distance. Use average speeds over the full journey; acceleration, traffic and stops are not modeled separately.
  • Distance, speed and each travel time must be positive. The difference can be negative, zero or positive; a negative value means the second journey is shorter in time.
  • Compound time entries use hours:minutes:seconds. Enter 2:0:0 for two hours and 0:30:0 for half an hour.
  • The optional year is a fixed 365.25 days, and a month is one twelfth of that year: 30.4375 days. These units do not count calendar months, leap days or clock changes.

Common questions

Does doubling speed always halve the modeled travel time?

Yes, for the same distance under this constant-average-speed model. Real travel time depends on the actual average speed, including any stops included in the measured interval.

Can I calculate speed from a known journey time?

Enter the distance and one travel time, leaving its speed blank. For 100 km and 2:0:0, the average speed is 50 km/h.
