How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Edit a calculated value to solve backwards, or lock a value to hold it fixed.

Formula and method
Divide distance by average speed. A journey of 150 miles at an average 60 miles per hour takes 2.5 hours, or 2 hours 30 minutes, before any extra stops.
Travel time = distance ÷ average speed
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Distance
- 150 mi
- Speed
- 60 mph
- Time
- 2.5 hrs
Assumptions and limitations
- Use the average speed you expect over the whole moving journey. A posted speed limit may overstate that average. Add rest stops and other delays separately.
- Use the units shown beside each field. This model assumes the stated relationship and does not account for quantities left out of the formula.
Common questions
Should I enter the speed limit?
Use the average speed you expect over the whole moving journey. A posted speed limit may overstate that average. Add rest stops and other delays separately.
