How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Use the result with context

Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.

Formula and method

A 20% discount followed by another 10% reduces a 100 price to 72. The savings are 28 and the effective discount is 28%, rather than 30%.

Final price = original × (1 − first discount) × (1 − second discount); effective discount = 1 − (1 − first) × (1 − second)

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Original price
100 USD
First discount
20 %
Second discount on reduced price
10 %
Price after both discounts
72 USD
Total price reduction
28 USD
Combined effective discount
28 %

Assumptions and limitations

  • Each reduction must be between zero and 100%, with a nonnegative original price. The second discount applies to the already reduced price.
  • Assumes both percentage offers apply to the same item without minimum spends, caps, excluded products, extra fees or rounding after each step. The second discount is locked by default but can be unlocked.

Common questions

Why can I not simply add the discounts?

The second percentage uses a smaller base. On a 100 price, the first 20% saves 20; the next 10% saves 8 from the remaining 80.

Does reversing the order change the final price?

For two uncapped percentage reductions with no intermediate rounding, multiplication gives the same final price in either order.

References

Bookify adds explicit price-discount bounds: prices are nonnegative and both reductions range from zero through 100 percent.
