How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.
Use the result with context
Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.
Formula and method
At cost 80 and margin 20%, selling price is 100, profit is 20 and markup is 25%.
Revenue = cost × (1 + markup); margin = profit/revenue; markup = 1/(1 − margin) − 1.
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Cost
- 80 USD
- Margin
- 20 %
- Markup
- 25 %
- Revenue
- 100 USD
- Profit
- 20 USD
Assumptions and limitations
- Margin divides profit by revenue; markup divides profit by cost. They are different percentages.
- Use positive cost and a margin below 100% for a finite price. Negative margin or markup can represent a loss sale if the resulting selling price is positive.
- Amounts use a single consistent currency. Currency selector conversion factors are a captured static snapshot; they are not current FX quotes.
- Clear the unknown field before solving an inverse. Locks keep known values fixed; contradictory locked values require correction.
- Domain review limits calculations to the documented finite scenario; original captured equations, inverses and unit options are retained.
