Formula and method
In initial displayed units, Number of steps 10, Riser rise 20, Effective tread run 30, Landing depth 50, Stair width 100, Extra length 10, Extra width 10, Price of carpet 10 gives Carpet length 530, Carpet width 110, Carpet area 5.83, Carpet cost 58.3.
Length = steps×riser wrap+(steps−1)×tread run+landing+length allowance; area = length×(stair width+width allowance).

Assumptions and limitations
- The strip covers N rises and N−1 treads plus the entered landing. Nosing wrap is idealized as rectangular, triangular or circular arcs; underlay, cutting layout and installation are excluded.
- Use compatible measurement units. Clear an unknown before solving for it, and lock independent known values when comparing changes. Currency choices label amounts without exchange-rate conversion.
Common questions
Can I solve backward from the result?
Clear the unknown and enter independent known values. A rounded whole count cannot uniquely recover a continuous dimension; keep the original measured dimensions for procurement planning.
