Formula and method

Using the outdoor-run preset, four standard-size birds at 4 ft² each and two bantams at 2 ft² each give a combined coop-area allowance of 20 ft² (1.8580608 m²).

Coop area = standard bird count × standard allowance + bantam count × bantam allowance

Assumptions and limitations

  • The retained presets assign standard/bantam indoor area of 4/2 ft² with run access, 10/4 ft² when mostly inside, and 3/1 ft² with yard access. They are planning assumptions rather than universal welfare minimums.
  • Counts are whole and nonnegative. Leave an unused flock type blank or enter zero; entering both counts as zero gives zero modeled area.
  • This estimates coop floor allowance only. It does not size an outdoor run, roosts, nest boxes, ventilation, feeders or space lost to equipment.
  • Breed, climate, confinement time, flock behavior and local requirements can call for more space. Check local extension guidance for your conditions before building.

Common questions

Does entering zero for bantams hide the result?

No. Bookify shows the combined allowance when both counts are entered, including a zero count.

Is this also the size of the outdoor run?

No. The result is an indoor coop-area allowance. Outdoor space needs separate planning.
