Formula and method
In initial displayed units, Side length a 3, Unit area material price 5, Unit area labor cost 5, Unit border material price 2, Unit border labor cost 1 gives Square area 1, Square perimeter 4, Total cost 22.
Cost = area×(area material+labor rate)+perimeter×(border material+labor rate).

Assumptions and limitations
- The example uses feet for dimensions and yards for area/border price denominators. Triangles require positive sides/angles and strict triangle inequalities. Polygon and circular geometry excludes waste, seams and measurement uncertainty.
- Use compatible measurement units. Clear an unknown before solving for it, and lock independent known values when comparing changes. Currency choices label amounts without exchange-rate conversion.
Common questions
Can I solve backward from the result?
Clear the unknown and enter independent known values. A rounded whole count cannot uniquely recover a continuous dimension; keep the original measured dimensions for procurement planning.

The third ASA triangle angle uses exact pi rather than the captured rounded 3.1415-radian constant. Enforce valid triangle geometry and treat border prices as rates per unit length. The international acre is exactly 43560 square international feet; Bookify replaces the rounded captured area factor.
