How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

In initial display units, Shed length (L) 4, Shed width (W) 3, Wall height (H) 2, Roof rise (R) 4, Overhang (O) 0, Price per area of slab or foundation 10, Price per area of wall 5, Price per area of the roofing 8 gives Floor area 12, Wall area 40, Roof area 20, Cost of slab or foundation 120, Cost of wall 200, Cost of roofing 160, Total cost of shed 480.

Floor = length×width; wall = perimeter×wall height plus roof-end triangles; costs = each surface×its quoted area price.

Assumptions and limitations

  • This estimates idealized surfaces for the chosen roof type. Doors, windows, frame, fasteners, waste, installation and permits are excluded. Prices must refer to the same area unit as their denominator; Pitched roof rise must be positive. Overhang may be zero and is limited to 0.6096 m (2 ft). Enter zero roof rise explicitly when selecting a flat roof.
  • Select compatible units and clear the quantity to solve before supplying the remaining measurements. Rounded purchase counts cannot uniquely recover a continuous dimension. Currency choices label amounts and do not convert exchange rates.

Common questions

How can I solve for a missing measurement?

Clear that field, then enter independent known values. Lock a known measurement to preserve it while changing another value. Procurement counts are rounded upward and cannot be reversed uniquely.

References

Expose roof rise in flat-roof mode and require zero for flat roofs or positive rise for pitched roofs.
