Formula and method
A 10 m joint with a 10 mm by 10 mm rectangular cross section needs 1000 mL before loss. With no loss, four 310 mL packages at 5 each cost 20.
Net volume = length × width × depth; purchased volume = net volume/(1-loss fraction); packages = ceiling(purchased/package volume).

Assumptions and limitations
- Use the total joint run length and a rectangular bead cross section. This geometric model excludes tooling shape, cure shrinkage and manufacturer-specific coverage.
- Wastage is the fraction of purchased material lost, so the allowance divides by 1 minus loss fraction. It is not a simple added percentage. A 5% loss requires net volume/0.95.
- Use the package contents printed on the product; only complete packages are purchased.
- Clear the value you want to solve before entering the remaining independent measurements. Display rounding does not describe measurement uncertainty.
- Whole package, board, roll or truss ceilings use exact decimal arithmetic. An amount just above a whole-number boundary needs the next whole unit; numeric display rounding does not lower the purchase count.
Common questions
How should I enter an unknown quantity?
Leave the unknown field empty. Supply enough independent values; lock a known value if you need to preserve it while changing another control.
References
Enforce the stated arithmetic and physical domains. Pin local metric/imperial defaults and translate captured dataset keys to their exact numeric values, preserving every control and unit. Whole quantities use exact decimal ceilings because captured mathjs ceiling can undercount just above an integer. Package contents use their labeled metric volume or exact US liquid volume instead of rounded cubic-inch values.
