How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

A 10 by 15 foot room with eight-foot walls has 400 square feet of gross wall area. One assumed 21-square-foot door and two assumed 12-square-foot windows leave 355 square feet.

Net wall area = wall height × perimeter − 21 ft² × doors − 12 ft² × windows

Assumptions and limitations

  • Each door subtracts 21 ft² (1.95096384 m²) and each window subtracts 12 ft² (1.11483648 m²), regardless of display units. These are explicit model assumptions, not measurements of your openings.
  • Room walls have a uniform height. The estimate excludes ceilings, floors, sloped wall tops, trim and material coverage or waste.
  • Door and window counts are nonnegative whole numbers. Opening deductions cannot exceed gross wall area.
  • For actual opening sizes that differ, use separately measured opening areas in a more general area calculation.

Common questions

Can I enter an irregular room?

Select the entered-perimeter mode and add the wall lengths. The model still assumes one uniform height.

Are the door and window sizes adjustable?

This captured model uses fixed 21 ft² and 12 ft² deductions. It does not accept custom opening dimensions; the labels show these assumptions.

Bookify checks whole-number opening counts and permits zero net wall area without allowing deductions above gross wall area. The international acre is exactly 43560 square international feet; Bookify replaces the rounded captured area factor.
