How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method
In initial displayed units, Room length 4, Room width 3, Room height 2, Cost per panel 5 gives Gross room area 40, Net room area 40, Number of panels 34, Total cost 170.
Gross area = 2(length+width)×height+optional ceiling+triangular spaces; net = gross−doors−windows; panels = ceil(net/panel area).

Assumptions and limitations
- Room dimensions describe a rectangular room. Openings and triangular spaces use the entered counts and effective dimensions. Whole panel area is a coverage estimate that excludes cut layout, joint allocation and waste. Counts are whole nonnegative numbers. Exact whole-count operations accept finite quantities with magnitude below 10^50.
- Use compatible measurement units. Clear an unknown before solving for it, and lock independent known values when comparing changes. Currency choices label amounts without exchange-rate conversion.
Common questions
Can I solve backward from the result?
Clear the unknown and enter independent known values. A rounded whole count cannot uniquely recover a continuous dimension; keep the original measured dimensions for procurement planning.
References
Use exact decimal ceilings for whole quantities because the captured mathjs ceiling can undercount immediately above an integer boundary. US drywall panel areas use their exact international-foot dimensions instead of rounded square-meter areas. Enforce the stated physical geometry and whole-count domains. Integer membership is checked with isInteger, so ordinary, tiny and large fractional counts are rejected even when tolerant floor equality would pass.
