Formula and method

At an assumed 1.5 cents per mile, 20,000 miles plus $50 has an estimated value cost of $350. Compared with a $500 cash fare, the difference is $150 or 30%.

Valued redemption cost = miles × cents per mile / 100 + cash fees; difference = cash fare − valued redemption cost

Assumptions and limitations

  • Airline presets are static values from the captured definition. They are subjective illustrative assumptions, not live redemption quotes, cash exchange rates or guaranteed value. Use custom mode for your own valuation.
  • Use one currency consistently. Cents per mile means one hundredth of that same currency unit per mile; this page does not perform currency conversion.
  • Include taxes, fees and cash copayments in additional cash cost. Availability, transfer bonuses, point expiry and miles earned on a paid fare are not modeled.
  • A negative difference means the entered miles-plus-fees valuation exceeds the cash fare. A positive cash fare is needed for a finite percentage comparison.

Common questions

Is the valued redemption cost the cash I will pay?

No. Cash paid is the entered fee or copayment. The rest is an opportunity-cost estimate obtained by assigning a value to the miles you spend.

References

Bookify requires a positive cash fare for the percentage comparison.
