How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

Collecting 8 g of product from a theoretical 10 g gives an 80% yield. Collecting no product gives 0%.

Percent yield = actual product mass / theoretical product mass × 100

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Measured product mass
8 g
Theoretical product mass
10 g
Measured percent yield
80 %

Assumptions and limitations

  • Both masses must refer to the same product. Theoretical yield must be positive; measured mass and percent yield may be zero.
  • The theoretical amount is an input. This tool does not balance a chemical equation or identify a limiting reactant.
  • A reported result above 100% is retained as an arithmetic observation. It can indicate residual solvent, impurities, measurement error or an incorrect theoretical basis rather than excess pure product.
  • Use an independently determined theoretical yield. When actual yield and percent yield are both zero, a theoretical mass cannot be uniquely inferred.

Common questions

Can actual and theoretical masses use different units?

Yes. Each mass is converted before division. For example, 8 g divided by 0.01 kg still gives 80%.

References

Bookify accepts zero collected mass and zero measured percent yield while requiring positive theoretical mass.
