How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

A theoretical yield of 10 g and recovery of 80% correspond to 8 g of actual product.

Actual yield = theoretical yield × percent yield / 100

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Theoretical product mass
10 g
Measured-to-theoretical percentage
80 %
Measured product mass
8 g

Assumptions and limitations

  • Masses and percentages are nonnegative. A percentage can be determined only when theoretical yield is positive. Two zero masses do not define a unique percentage.
  • The theoretical amount must be based on the same product and a valid limiting-reactant calculation. This tool does not determine stoichiometry or identify the limiting reagent.
  • An apparent percentage above 100% is displayed to help diagnose inconsistent inputs, impurities, retained solvent or measurement error; it is not evidence of producing more pure product than the stoichiometric limit.

Common questions

Why can an apparent yield exceed 100%?

The measured sample may contain other material, or the assumed theoretical amount or measurements may be wrong. Check product identity and purity before interpreting it.

Can the tool calculate percent yield?

Yes. Enter actual and positive theoretical product masses; leave the percentage blank.
