Formula and method
Example in initial displayed units: Length 4, Width 3, Length 200, Width 100, Area waste allowance 10, Sheet material price per area 5 gives Total area to cover 12, Whole sheets (area estimate) 7, Estimated material budget 70.
sheet count = ceil(areaĂ—(1+waste fraction)/sheet area); budget = countĂ—sheet areaĂ—price per area

Assumptions and limitations
- This is an area-based whole-sheet quantity estimate, not a cutting or panel-placement plan. Grain direction, joint locations, offcut reuse, saw kerf and cut shapes can require additional sheets. The cost multiplies purchased sheet area by price per selected area unit; it is not a price-per-sheet input. Count and budget are read-only. The intermediate sheet-area field stays hidden as in the captured workflow.
- Use compatible units and enough independent measurements. Clear unknown quantities before solving backward; a rounded count does not uniquely determine original dimensions. Display rounding does not represent measurement uncertainty.
- Use matching currencies for input price and total budget. Mixed-currency conversions use rates captured on 2026-10-07, not live exchange rates. For a current budget, enter all figures in one currency using an appropriate current rate.
- The zero-area case returns zero sheets and zero budget. For a positive area, allow for a whole number of sheets; do not round an intermediate area calculation before applying the ceiling.
Common questions
Is the price input per sheet or per square meter?
It is price per the selected area unit, such as m² or ft². For a per-sheet price, divide that price by the sheet area in the same units before entering it.
