Formula and method
With 1 hectare, a combined 1 m within-row interval, 1 m row spacing and one plant per stand, the estimate is 10,000 plants. At 1000 seeds/kg, the 20 percent reserve gives 12 kg.
N = area × plants_per_stand / ((plant_spacing + walkway) × row_spacing); seed mass = 1.2N/(seeds per kg).

Assumptions and limitations
- Area initially uses hectares; spacing uses centimeters internally converted to meters. The layout assumes a regular rectangular lattice.
- The captured convention adds walkway width to within-row plant spacing. It does not add it to row spacing; confirm this convention against your actual field layout.
- The population is an area-density estimate and can be fractional; it does not place edge rows or round to whole planting positions. Plants per stand and seeds per mass unit must be positive whole numbers in the internal basis.
- The 20 percent allowance is fixed. It is a planning reserve, not a modeled germination percentage or a crop-specific recommendation.
- Seeds per mass is a measured lot property. Do not infer it from a universal species value.
Common questions
Where does the walkway width enter?
It is added to the within-row spacing in this captured layout convention.
Does the seed allowance guarantee enough plants?
No. It is a fixed 20 percent mass reserve; germination and field losses are separate.
