How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

A peak of 160 bpm followed by 140 bpm after one minute is a 20 bpm drop.

One-minute drop = peak heart rate − one-minute heart rate.

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Maximum heart rate after the exercise
160 bpm
Heart rate after 1 minute of rest
140 bpm
Heart rate recovery
20 bpm

Assumptions and limitations

  • Use readings from the same session with accurately timed measurement. The 1999 comparison threshold came from adults referred for clinical treadmill testing with an active cooldown, not arbitrary home rest or every age/health group. Timing, protocol, medication and measurement affect interpretation; these flags do not diagnose disease or prescribe exercise.
  • Clear an unknown before solving an available inverse branch, and lock independent known values when comparing measurements. Use compatible units; a one-way score or lookup does not supply an inverse.

Common questions

What does this result represent?

Use readings from the same session with accurately timed measurement. The 1999 comparison threshold came from adults referred for clinical treadmill testing with an active cooldown, not arbitrary home rest or every age/health group. Timing, protocol, medication and measurement affect interpretation; these flags do not diagnose disease or prescribe exercise.

Can I work backward from an answer?

Where the captured equation supplies an inverse, clear the unknown and enter independent known values. Rounded scores, one-way outputs and fixed lookup choices do not uniquely recover inputs.

References

Allow zero or negative measured pulse drops; positive readings remain required. Use the 1999 active-cooldown study threshold of 12 bpm or less without diagnosing an individual.
