How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Inputs and results stay in this browser tab. Bookify does not upload or store the values you enter.
Formula and method
10 km, 600 m ascent, 1200 m descent and a 30-minute break give 2 h 30 min in the 5 km/h gentle-descent variant.
Hours = distance km / (5 or 4) + ascent m/600 ± descent m/1200 + breaks h.
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Distance
- 10 km
- Ascent

- Hiking time
- 2:30 hrs / min
Assumptions and limitations
- These are fixed planning-rule arithmetic variants, not a measured hiking pace or safety estimate. The gentle-descent branch subtracts time and the steep branch adds it. Choose compatible route measurements; combinations that produce negative modeled time are invalid. Terrain, load, navigation, snow, weather, fatigue and group pace are not modeled, and can materially change elapsed time.
- Clear an unknown before solving an available inverse branch, and lock independent known values when comparing measurements. Use compatible units; a one-way score or lookup does not supply an inverse.
Common questions
What does this result represent?
These are fixed planning-rule arithmetic variants, not a measured hiking pace or safety estimate. The gentle-descent branch subtracts time and the steep branch adds it. Choose compatible route measurements; combinations that produce negative modeled time are invalid. Terrain, load, navigation, snow, weather, fatigue and group pace are not modeled, and can materially change elapsed time.
Can I work backward from an answer?
Where the captured equation supplies an inverse, clear the unknown and enter independent known values. Rounded scores, one-way outputs and fixed lookup choices do not uniquely recover inputs.
