How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Edit a calculated value to solve backwards, or lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

One nautical mile is exactly 1.852 kilometres, or about 1.150779 statute miles. In the separate trip section, 10 knots maintained for two hours covers 20 nautical miles.

1 nautical mile = 1852 metres; trip distance = speed × elapsed time; 1 knot = 1 nautical mile/hour

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Assumptions and limitations

  • The distance-conversion fields and the trip fields are separate calculations. Changing the distance to convert does not set the trip distance.
  • The trip model uses a constant scalar speed and positive time/distance. It does not account for currents, wind, routing, acceleration, stops or fuel reserves. The days:hours:minutes field uses fixed 24-hour days.

Common questions

Are a nautical mile and a statute mile interchangeable?

No. The international nautical mile is 1,852 metres; a statute mile is 1,609.344 metres. Select the intended distance unit when entering or comparing values.

Does the converter automatically use its distance for the trip?

No. The trip section has its own distance input. Enter two known trip quantities to solve the third, keeping speed and distance units consistent.
