Formula and method

Ten pieces measuring 2 × 0.1 × 0.05 meters contain 0.1 m³ in total and 20 meters of combined length. At 5 per piece, the order costs 50.

Piece volume = length × width × thickness; order totals = per-piece values × quantity

Assumptions and limitations

  • Use actual measured dimensions for physical volume. Nominal trade sizes can differ from finished sizes. Saw cuts, defects, trimming and purchase allowances are not included automatically.
  • Use consistent units and project-specific dimensions, density and prices. This geometric estimate does not add quantities that are absent from the formula.

Common questions

Should I enter nominal or actual lumber dimensions?

Use actual measured dimensions for physical volume. Nominal trade sizes can differ from finished sizes. Saw cuts, defects, trimming and purchase allowances are not included automatically.
