Formula and method
A 6 by 3 meter bed with 20 centimeters of gravel contains 3.6 m³. At a custom density of 1,500 kg/m³ and 40 per tonne, it needs 5.4 tonnes costing 216.
Volume = length × width × depth; tonnes = volume × density ÷ 1,000 when density is in kg/m³

Assumptions and limitations
- Use a density that matches the volume being estimated. Loose delivered volume and finished compacted volume can differ. The calculation does not automatically adjust for settlement, compaction, delivery or minimum orders.
- Enter dimensions, densities and prices that describe the actual project. Quantities absent from the formula are not added automatically.
Common questions
Should I use loose or compacted density?
Use a density that matches the volume being estimated. Loose delivered volume and finished compacted volume can differ. The calculation does not automatically adjust for settlement, compaction, delivery or minimum orders.
