How to use this calculator
- Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
- Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
- Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.
Use the result with context
Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.
Formula and method
Starting with zero savings and depositing 100 at the first month-end reaches a 100-unit goal after one month, with no interest needed to reach it.
Continuous months = ln((goal+deposit/r)/(deposit/r+initial))/ln(1+r). The funding chart uses the next completed monthly period, with deposits at each month-end.

Assumptions and limitations
- The annual input is a nominal rate divided by twelve. Contributions occur at each month-end. The numeric duration is a continuous algebraic interpolation; the note and chart use completed monthly periods.
- Completed-month funding uses the next whole month with a 1e-60 numerical conversion tolerance. The chart corrects captured mixed floor/round treatment that could show a total unrelated to the goal.
- All returns are hypothetical and constant. Taxes, fees, variable investment outcomes and actual bank crediting conventions are omitted.
- Keep monetary inputs in one currency. Currency conversion factors are a captured snapshot rather than current quotes.
- Clear the unknown numeric field before solving a supported inverse.
Common questions
What does this scenario assume?
The annual input is a nominal rate divided by twelve. Contributions occur at each month-end. The numeric duration is a continuous algebraic interpolation; the note and chart use completed monthly periods.
What does the result leave out?
All returns are hypothetical and constant. Taxes, fees, variable investment outcomes and actual bank crediting conventions are omitted.
References
Reviewed local arithmetic: Continuous months = ln((goal+deposit/r)/(deposit/r+initial))/ln(1+r). The funding chart uses the next completed monthly period, with deposits at each month-end. Model input requirements: Use a positive monthly savings deposit. Initial savings must be nonnegative.
