Formula and method
An after-tax monthly income of 3,000 gives 2,100 in the 70% category, 600 in the 20% category and 300 in the 10% category. Annual income is divided by twelve first.
Monthly income = entered income ÷ period divisor; allocations = monthly income × 0.70, 0.20 and 0.10

Assumptions and limitations
- This is a fixed illustration, not a recommendation for a particular household. Enter after-tax income and compare the allocations with actual obligations, goals and timing.
- The essentials illustration assigns 40% of the essentials pot to housing, 20% to food, 15% each to transport and utilities, and 10% to insurance. Those are shares of the 70% pot, not of total income.
- The 10% allocation is flexible in this model. It does not choose investments or account for investment risk. Income and displayed allocations must be positive.
- Annual income is averaged over twelve months. A cash-flow budget still needs the dates money arrives and bills are due.
- Use a consistent currency when comparing amounts. Optional currency conversions use captured reference factors, not live exchange rates, bank quotes or fees.
Common questions
Is housing 40% of my total income here?
No. It is 40% of the essentials allocation, which is 70% of income. Multiplying 0.40 by 0.70 gives 28% of total income.
What if my essentials cost more than 70%?
The formula does not adjust the fixed shares. Compare them with your actual costs and revise your budget rather than treating the percentages as mandatory limits.
