How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Use the result with context

Results are estimates for planning and education. Confirm rates, taxes, fees, and legal requirements with the relevant institution or a qualified professional before making a financial decision.

Formula and method

On the five-point scale, 10 responses at each rating from one through five give a mean effort score of 3. Higher scores on this scale mean greater difficulty.

Mean effort score = sum(rating × responses at that rating) / total responses

Assumptions and limitations

  • This version defines one as very easy and the highest rating as very difficult. Higher numerical scores therefore indicate more effort; some surveys use the opposite direction.
  • Enter a nonnegative whole response count for every category, including zero. At least one response is needed to define a mean.
  • The mean treats the ordered rating steps as equally spaced. It is not a percentage of favorable responses and does not adjust for sampling or nonresponse bias.
  • The displayed low, middle and high effort bands are retained illustrative bands. They are not universal performance standards or statistically tested thresholds.

Common questions

Can I compare a five-point result directly with a seven-point result?

No. Compare results using the same question, direction and scale, or use a separately justified normalization method.
