How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the known values in the units shown. Results update as you type.
  2. Where results are editable, change one to solve backwards. Lock a value to hold it fixed.
  3. Use the worked example to check the method. Reset restores the starting fields.

Formula and method

Example in initial displayed units: Ladder reach (R) 4, Ladder bottom (B) 1 gives Ladder angle (α) 75.963757, Working rail length to support 4.1231056.

α = atan(reach/setback); working rail = setback/cos α; total rail = working rail+upper rail

Worked example

Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.

Ladder reach (R)
4 m
Ladder bottom (B)
1 m
Working rail length to support
4.123 m
Ladder angle (α)
75.96 deg

Assumptions and limitations

  • The working rail runs from the foot to the support. Reach and setback are vertical and horizontal distances, while the upper section is measured along the rail. Roof/edge mode adds that rail length; it is not vertical clearance above a landing. The retained model requires reach to exceed setback. Geometry alone does not certify a ladder setup.
  • Use compatible units and enough independent measurements. Clear unknown values before solving backward. Display precision does not quantify uncertainty in site measurements.

Common questions

Is a 3-foot upper rail section the same as 3 feet of vertical landing clearance?

No. Vertical clearance is upper rail length multiplied by sin α. OSHA’s upper-landing requirement concerns vertical extension, while its ordinary non-self-supporting ladder angle guidance uses setback of approximately one-quarter of working rail length.
