Formula and method
Example in initial displayed units: Wall length 4, On-center spacing 40, Price per stud 10, Waste allowance 15 gives Stud equivalents (unrounded) 11, Continuous estimated budget "126.5".
stud equivalents = wall length/spacing+1; budget = equivalents×(1+waste fraction)×unit price
Worked example
Enter these known values and leave the other values blank.
- Wall length
- 4 m
- On-center spacing
- 40 cm
- Price per stud
- 10 USD
- Waste allowance
- 15 %
- Stud equivalents (unrounded)
- 11
- Continuous estimated budget
- 126.5 USD
Assumptions and limitations
- Spacing is measured on center. The retained model produces an unrounded stud-equivalent quantity and applies waste continuously to its budget. Round purchase quantities up separately; openings, corner assemblies, doubled members and structural sizing are not included.
- Use compatible units and enough independent measurements. Clear unknown values before solving backward. Display precision does not quantify uncertainty in site measurements.
Common questions
Why can the stud estimate or waste allowance be fractional?
The formula divides wall length by spacing without rounding. Its cost is a continuous estimate, not a whole-piece purchase invoice. Round needed pieces up and include the additional members required by the wall layout.
References
Require physical geometric bounds, viable clear spans and whole post counts for the documented planning model.
